Tutor Spotlight: Spencer Peng

We’re getting up close and personal with one of our GMAT content gurus, Spencer Peng. Spencer has worked for LTG for three months, and has worked in education since 2000.

Why did you choose to work in education/tutoring/test prep?

I love ideas and people. I planned to be a doctor, actually. But as a college freshman I realized that I could use my expertise to help people, or I could “transfer” my expertise to people who could then run with it. I enjoyed both, but I fell in love with the latter-with watching my students learn, grow, and succeed.

What are you working on/what are you doing at the moment?
I’m working with our Content team to create better lessons and questions. I and our creative writer are designing features to make our apps more social and fun. I’m also collaborating with our designer on a website for tutors to see analytics on their students and chat with them.

When you’re not at work, how do you spend your time?
My wife is God’s gift to me, and together we are enjoying the year-old boy-girl twins he’s given us. So I’m always at work: If I’m not improving test prep, I’m supporting my wife and watching our kids grow day by day. I love traveling (I’ve been to 18 countries on 4 continents), music (I used to lead a band and write songs — these days I still sing and try to keep up on the guitar and cello), and getting people together for quality time and food!

What’s the best piece of advice you wish someone had given you before you applied to business school?
Make the most of your time in business school. Know what you’re focused on. There are so many things going on and you can’t possibly do everything. Know who you are and what you want out of your time in school. And while business school can be hectic, make sure you stop to really talk, listen, and get to know your classmates.
